Reaching your full potential is an admirable goal in life, but one that most never realize. So how can you reach your “Golden Years” and be content in the journey you charted.
Set Goals Which Inspire You. First, you must chart your own course. If you simply go with the flow, you’ll simply end up downstream. Not necessarily where you want to be. Give some critical though to what you want to accomplish with your life. Then do a reality check with your goals. Are they reachable? Can they be achieved? If you’re 40 years old and want to become a NBA star, you probably need to refocus your energies toward a more obtainable goal.
Package Yourself For Success. Once you know what you want to become. Look and act the part. This will give you confidence and inspire the confidence of others in you.
Take Action. A goal without action is simply a dream. The way you can make your dreams come true is to start taking action. If you want to become a writer; take writing courses, read books, attend conferences, speak to other writers and develop your skills by practicing your craft. Whatever the endeavor find out what steps you can start taking immediately to help you reach your goal.
Be Disciplined. Successful people do things that unsuccessful people are unwilling to do. It’s not always fun or easy to reach your goals. Watching TV or going out may seem more appealing than working on tasks that will help you reach your goals. Just realize that your actions have consequences. Be a good steward of your time and make sure that your attention is given to your priorities.
Find A Mentor Or Get A Coach. Having the support and insight of others can give you the boost you need to help you reach your potential. We all need people that believe in us an share our enthusiasm. We also need those that will give us objective advice and counsel.
Avoid Negative People. They will drain your energy and enthusiasm and may even cause you to doubt your abilities. History books are filled of stories of gifted people whose talents were overlooked by others. Walt Disney was fired by a newspaper editor because he had “no good ideas.” Haydn gave up on trying to make Beethoven a musician, because he seemed too slow and plodding, with no apparent talent.
Develop Your Network. No man is an island, and the quicker you realize this the quicker you will succeed. You can accomplish so much more with the help of others. But before you can expect others to care about you, you need to show you care about them. Go out of your way to develop relationships with others. Strategically cultivate relationships with those that can have the biggest impact on helping you reach your goals. Help these people and they will gladly return the favor ten-fold.
Be Prepared For Setbacks. Everyone has setbacks. Expect them. Look at them as ways to learn and grow. True champions have learned to embrace failure as great opportunities for learning. If you want to succeed, you have to develop a positive attitude about failure. John Steinbeck wrote, “Somewhere there is defeat for everyone. Some are destroyed by defeat, and some made small and mean by victory. Greatness lives in one who triumphs equally over defeat and victory.” The key is to learn from both, so you can achieve even greater victories in the future.
Keep A Positive Attitude. It’s been said that 85% of succeeding is in your attitude. Purposeful action, positive affirmations and a healthy lifestyle are all ways to help you maintain a positive mental attitude. Your attitudes are habits of thought that impact everything you do. One way to improve your attitude is to constantly pour positive thoughts into your mind. Read inspirational passages or books, listen to motivational tapes, attend seminars and surround yourself with others who share your positive outlook on life.
Take 100% Responsibility. It’s easy to make excuses, rationalize, or blame others/circumstances. Unfortunately, these tactics won’t help you take control of your life and achieve your potential. Take an objective look at what’s holding you back. What are your obstacles? Then come up with solutions to the things that are getting in your way to success. Break the solutions down into action steps and you are on your way to taking charge of your life. By taking 100% responsibility for everything in your life, your life will change for the better. You’ll have more power and you’ll gain control of your destiny.
