What’s Your Purpose?

By Will Turner

After years of pushing to be the best, Jack made it to the top of his profession. He was the number one salesperson for his company making a very healthy six-figure income. He had the lifestyle that he had dreamed of and all the outer trappings that let the world know that he had made it; a new Jaguar convertible, a vacation home at the beach and a home theater system that never failed to impress his friends and neighbors.

Despite the success, Jack was feeling less than fulfilled. He had “made it” but over time that didn’t seem to be enough. With some help, Jack discovered that he needed to dig deeper to discover what was truly important to him.

Sure, the lifestyle and material possessions were great, but they weren’t enough. Jack had to ask himself, “What does success mean to me?” What he learned was that as he achieved and accumulated more, finding the true meaning of success became more critical.

Jack had to “peel the onion” back to get to what was really important to him. On the surface, success meant money to Jack. At the next level, he discovered that more money meant he had more flexibility. Greater flexibility gave him the opportunity to “spoil” his family and friends and make a positive contribution to their lives and happiness. And finally, he realized that making a positive contribution to his loved ones and helping them (beyond the monetary and material contributions) was what really gave him a sense of accomplishment and fulfillment. Jack realized that the ultimate answer to the “success question” yielded deeper distinctions, stronger motives and more authentic reasons for why all his efforts were important.

My experience with other highly successful salespeople is that most have discovered what is truly important to them. They have uncovered their driving purpose. Their purpose, in turn, keeps them going and gives them the inner fortitude to tackle their goals and reach for their dreams.

It’s true that successful people do what less successful people are unwilling to do. Do successful salespeople enjoy everything that they have to do to succeed? Usually not; but they understand that to realize their purpose, they have to do whatever it takes. That means that they take the good with the bad and focus on overcoming their obstacles along the way. They focus on reaching their goals, because it allows them to realize their purpose in life.

Do you know what your purpose is? What does success mean to you? What is really important for you to achieve, become and have? Why is it important? The answers to these questions can help you create a path to your own personal success.
