What’s your voice? It’s a great question that each of us needs to think about. Lou Heckler, CSP, CPAE shared that question in a presentation to the Virginia Chapter of the National Speakers Association recently.
Lou is a giant in the speaking industry and he shared his wisdom, insights and humor with a packed room of members and guests. Lou went on to explain that we are all unique because of our voice. Our voice is our voice because of who we are and all the collective experiences that we’ve had. And while you and I could be experts in a similar topic area, we will be different experts because of our different voices.
Expressing your voice and being authentic to who you are is what makes you stand out from everyone else who does what you do. It’s what makes you special. It gives you your unique vantage point and understanding of the world. Discovering and embracing your voice will lead you to a path that is designed specifically for you.
Part of finding your voice is recognizing and understanding what makes you tick. What do you care about and why do you care? What are you passionate about?
What do you stand for? Why should someone want to listen to you? What do you have to say that is meaningful and valuable to others? What’s your message and how did you arrive at it? In other words, what’s your voice?
By discovering your voice, you can learn to change your world by changing yourself. In the grand scheme of things, that is what you can control. Mahatma Gandhi said, “We must be the change we want to see.”
In other words, we cannot expect to change others if we do not start with ourselves. When we understand our voice, we are strengthened with our own resolve. We accept and possibly even embrace responsibility, power and change.
