Think Like A Tiger

If you’re a golf fan, you probably watched Tiger Woods win yet another playoff this past weekend at Bridgestone. What made it so remarkable was the way in which he won it. There is a lesson for all of us in Tiger’s 9th playoff win.

Tiger was leading by two strokes going into the last two holes of the match. He’d fought all day long to gain the advantage and he looked like a sure thing to win another title. Yet, inexplicably he faltered on holes 17 and 18 while Stewart Cink charged ahead with back-to-back birdies. It was playoff time.

On the first playoff hole, Cink was poised to defeat Tiger, who had hit a poor approach shot. Somehow Tiger maintained his concentration, however, and tied Cink on the hole. Off to the second playoff hole, where the result was the same.

On the third playoff hole, Cink got in trouble off the tee but was able to recover. It looked like yet another tied hole. Until Tiger, in a driving rain storm, hit a perfect shot into the green and sunk a six-foot putt to win.

What made Tiger the winner over a man with twice as much experience? It wasn’t how long they’d played the game that mattered; it was the experience of winning that made the difference. Tiger was nine and one in playoffs going into this one and Cink was just one and one. Tiger expected to win, while Cink hoped he would. Through all of the bad shots, lousy weather and crowd noise, Tiger never once lost his confidence or his focus. Cink did and it was the difference between winning and losing.

Each day you face challenges in your selling. When you learn to maintain your confidence and focus during the toughest of times, you’ll end up being a winner. It has worked for Tiger nine out of ten times.
