Where does the time go? Believe it or not, the first quarter of 2003 is over. Are you where you need to be to reach your annual goals? Assuming that your progress toward your goals is proportionately distributed over all four quarters, you should be at 25%.
So it’s a good time for a quick assessment. What’s working well? What’s not? Are any of the assumptions that you made in determining your goals in need of adjustment? If so, why? If you’re not where you need to be, what can you do now to make up for a slow start?
Are there any obstacles that are getting in the way to your success? Identify all the obstacles that stand between you and your goals. The obstacles can be internal or external. An internal obstacle may be your tendency to procrastinate or a negative attitude. An external obstacle could be the impact from the war in Iraq on consumer spending as it affects your product.
Once all the obstacles have been identified, clarified and written out, it’s time to focus on overcoming them and reaching your goals. It starts with some simple brainstorming and problem-solving. What are the possible solutions to your obstacles? Write out all of the solutions that come to mind even if they seem simple or obvious.
Examine the solution(s) that makes the most sense and take the time to flush out the details to determine a realistic course of action. Implement the solutions by outlining the specific action steps you will need to take. Are there other people involved in achieving the goal? If so, delegate or assign tasks as necessary. Also remember that in addition to assigning someone to be responsible for it, each action step should have a target date for its completion.
By monitoring your progress, assessing what’s working and what’s not and then doing something about it, you can stay focused on hitting your goals. You’re success in 2003 depends on it.
