If you want to tap into a higher level of personal mastery, you will need to effectively use your subconscious mind. Experts suggest that up to 95% of what we do comes from “old programming” of our subconscious mind. And despite its power, the subconscious is a servant to the conscious mind. Since your subconscious mind does not distinguish between what is real and what is imagined, you can control what information it is fed. This, in turn, will have a direct impact on what you are able to achieve.
There are several methods to engage the subconscious mind. Imagery and visualization are effective ways to focus the powers of your subconscious. For example, world-class athletes have found that by mentally visualizing their performance before a big event, they can outperform their competition. When your goal is to obtain something tangible, a picture of the object can be a great way to keep your reward in mind.
Sometimes, however, what you are striving for is more intangible. You want to be a more successful boss, salesperson, employee, etc. The use of affirmations is a simple and powerful way to keep focused and build your subconscious belief in yourself. Over four centuries ago, William Shakespeare said “If you seek a virtue and have it not, assume it.” And that gets to the heart of what affirmations are all about.
Affirmations are positive statements that describe the person you want to become. What you say to your “self” and, more importantly, what you believe about your “self” can greatly influence what you do and how you feel. Your self-talk can be very positive or very negative. Affirmations are the positive form of self-talk.
Affirmations can help you succeed by tapping into the power of your subconscious. To be effective, an affirmation should be:
* Stated positively
* Stated in the first person
* Expressed in the present tense ("I am…” NOT “I will…")
* Believable
* Related to your goals
Let’s say that you procrastinate on important tasks more than you should. An example of an affirmation using the above characteristics would be “I am a master goal achiever who uses my time effectively throughout the day.”
The use of affirmations can be a great tool for achieving your goals. The proper use of affirmations will reinforce your self-confidence and inspire you to achieve more.
The hardest part of harnessing the power of affirmations is developing the discipline and habit to use them. So here’s a challenge. Write three affirmations on an index card. Copy the index card with the same three affirmations onto two other index cards. Place one of the index cards where you will see it in the morning when you get up, place another one at your desk or on your computer where you will see it during the day, and place the third one where you will see it in the evening. During the course of your day, take the time to stop and read each index card at least once. Do this for 30 days. You will be amazed at what you’re able to achieve when you direct and harness the power of your subconscious mind.
