Forget The Get Rich Quick Schemes

By Will Turner

Why do we always expect to take the short-cut to success even though we know that it rarely works that way? There are no magic pills.

We want to eat whatever we want and still lose weight. Have you or someone you know been lured into the Atkins diet, the celebrity diet or the “eat all the peanut butter and ice cream you can while standing on your head” diet.

The fact is that we all know that the way to lose weight is to burn more calories than we consume. That means eating healthy meals and exercising; period. Doesn’t everyone on the planet know this by now?

Yet, how many people try one diet after another in vain. I don’t think I’ve ever seen an interview with an obese person who didn’t say, “I’ve tried countless diets and they didn’t work.” Sure, they recount how they lost an initial 20, 30, or 50 pounds on this diet or that diet. But, then they always gain it all back and then some.

I was recently hanging out at my favorite coffee shop. The store manager was lamenting that he had to go to a presentation for some internet buying program that a former employee invited him to. It turned out to be a pyramid-type, multi-level marketing program.

You know the kind. You bring in your friends and family and they bring in theirs and before you know it, everyone is RICH. If only it was so easy.

I have a student in a sales class now that wants to be in sales, because he knows that he can have an unlimited income. Yet, he’s not willing to do the work to make it. He only wants it if it’s easy. My prediction is that he won’t make it, unless he makes some drastic changes.

It doesn’t matter whether we’re talking about diets, multi-level marketing, or your sales career; short-cuts don’t work. Nothing replaces hard work.

Our society, as a whole, has become undisciplined. I heard on the news the other day that Americans, on average, are 25 pounds heavier today than they were 40 years ago. That’s a lot of burgers and fries and not much shaking going on.

Discipline is doing what you need to do, even when you don’t feel like doing it. It’s realizing that those things worth having are worth working for. It’s putting your nose to the grindstone and not letting life’s unproductive distractions sidetrack your dreams and aspirations.

The choices are simple when you think about them. The consequences are life-changing. Anyone for a donut?
