We’re all creatures of habit. In fact, behavioral psychologists say that approximately 88% of our day is spent on autopilot with little conscious thought or effort. Unfortunately, not all of our daily habits are positive.
In fact, we all have negative habits. These are habits that hold us back or limit our potential. Negative habits include things like procrastinating, not saying “no” often enough, not planning our day effectively, socializing during work hours, working during family/personal time, being unfocused, spending too much time searching for items in a cluttered work area, arriving late to meetings or appointments, and the list goes on.
Since most of us have so many bad habits, trying to tackle them can seem a little overwhelming. How productive would you be if you could get rid of a dozen habits that currently hold you back? Here’s an exercise that will help you eliminate your 12 worst habits over the next year.
Step One: List out all your negative habits. Come up with as many as you can.
Step Two: Rank your negative habits. The habit that has the largest negative impact on your success should be number one.
Step Three: Select your number one negative habit and look at all the ways it impacts you.
Step Four: List out three or more action steps that you can implement immediately to address your negative habit.
Step Five: Continue to work on the action steps each day for the next month.
Step Six: At the end of 30 days, repeat the process by selecting another negative habit to work on.
Going through a simple and deliberate process will help you eliminate one bad habit a month. With the right focus and discipline, your negative habits will become sitting ducks that you can knock off one at a time.
